Bottled Water Voluntarily Recalled

14 Brands Of Bottled Water Voluntarily Recalled Due To Potential E. Coli Contamination

June 23, 2015

A water bottling company that is responsible for 14 different brands issued a voluntary recall on Monday after discovering that one of their spring water sources tested positive for E. coli bacteria.

“E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes," a representative of Niagara Bottling LLC said in a statement. "Microbes in these wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly and people with severely compromised immune systems."

The recall affected all spring water products from Niagra's Hamburg and Allentown, Pennsylvania, facilities. There haven't been any reported injuries or illnesses related to the recall, though the company vowed to move their operations permanently. The recall includes all spring water products purchased between June 10 at 3 a.m. and June 18 at 8 p.m. from the two Pennsylvania operations, and the brands affected are: Acadia, Acme, Big Y, Best Yet, 7-Eleven, Niagara, Nature’s Place, Pricerite, Superchill, Morning Fresh, Shaws, ShopRite, Western Beef Blue and Wegmans. Stores recalling the water bottles alongside Niagara Bottling include Wegmans, ShopRite, 7-Eleven and Acme.

Ban The Bottle?

Vancouver Parks Almost Banned the Water Bottle.
What do you think of their decision?

Bottled water ban rejected by Vancouver Park Board

Park board has a contract with Coca-Cola until 2016

The Vancouver Park Board has voted against phasing out the sale of bottled water at concession stands, but will study the idea of adding more water fountains.
Commissioner Michael Wiebe put forward the motion, arguing a ban on bottled water would help meet the city's Greenest City Action Plan. But that part of the motion failed to get enough support from his fellow commissioners to pass.
The board did pass a motion to study adding more water fountains to allow people to fill up their own water bottles.
In 2009, the City of Vancouver eliminated the use of bottled water in civic offices, and asked the Vancouver Park Board to follow suit. But the park board refused in 2009 as well, because of concerns over revenue loss.
The Vancouver Park Board has a supply contract with Coca-Cola, which includes the exclusive supply of still bottled water at all facilities until 2016.

City cleaning pipes to stop brown water

The brown water battle begins this weekend as city crews begin the daunting task of cleaning 2,585 kilometres of water mains in two years.
The target this season will be to clean 25%, with the remaining pipes fast-tracked for cleaning by the fall of 2016, according to the city's manager of engineering for water and waste services.
"With fast-tracking the program we will have more crews working, some longer hours," said Geoff Patton. "We're putting more crews on to get it done faster."
The roll out of this parcel of the $250,000 program, implemented after a recommendation from an independent report brought to council in January, was late by about two months.
Patton blamed the delay on the frozen pipe issue which finally came to an end this week.
The program couldn't begin while citizens were being told to run their water to avoid frozen pipes because this program requires the opposite.
"With the water main cleaning program, we tell people to turn off their water," he said. "Those two messages are in conflict so we wanted to make sure we addressed the frozen pipe issue."

Better Behavior in a Glass: Why Water Matters

Misbehavior? How about nice glass of water?

We've long heard that children may become less than pleasant when they are hungry.  Let's face it, the same can be said of ourselves.  Did you also know the same may be true when your child is thirsty and dehydrated?  As part of the #OlympicMoms campaign, we're talking about water consumption today. Good ole' H20.  Something so simple is really so important.
3 Reasons to Make Sure Your Kids Get Enough Water

1.  Dehydration can cause headaches.  Headaches make people unhappy...and crabby. Enough said.  Couple this with the fact that young children may not be able to communicate they have a headache or feel "out of sorts".  It comes out in their behavior instead.  If your child is acting "wonky" (hardly a technical term, but so fitting here), encourage her to drink some water.
2.  Dehydration impedes learning.  That's right.  It causes grogginess, low short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing. Many schools recognize the importance of hydration to learning and encourage students to have a water bottle by their desks. If your school doesn't, see what can be done about changing this policy.  It's really that important.  (And as I look back, I remember thinking as a kid, "Why do the teachers get to have drinks/coffee at their desks, but the students don't?"  It was an extra special treat if you did something exceptionally well in class and the teacher would let you go to the drinking fountain to get a drink of water.)  Let's all take up the glad chant: "Don't delay, drink your water today!"

3.  Reduce childhood obesity.  Some kids eat when they are actually thirsty.  Encourage your child to drink water throughout the day to lessen mindless snacking.  This can help kids maintain a healthy weight. Water is preferable to juice, sugary drinks and sports drinks for kids.  Also, avoid having your child gulp water. It is better to sip it throughout the day to maintain optimal benefits, and maintain better homeostasis.

BONUS REASON:

Drinking water keeps the immune system running smoothly, lessening the chances of your child catching seasonal colds and flu.  Yes!

If you haven't been encouraging water consumption in your household, this might be a good time to start!

Expired Water?

How Does Water Go Expired?

Have you ever wondered why that bottle of Poland Spring has a “drink by” date on it when common sense dictates that water doesn’t go bad? You can thank the great state of New Jersey. A 1987 NJ state law required all food products sold there to display an expiration date of two years or less from the date of manufacture. Labeling, separating and shipping batches of expiration-dated water to the Garden State seemed a little inefficient to bottled water producers, so most of them simply started giving every bottle a two-year expiration date, no matter where it was going. Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has never established or suggested a limitation on the shelf life of bottled water as long as it’s produced in accordance with regulations and the bottle remains properly sealed. Makes sense, because it’s, you know…water.

Better WIth Age?

While “expired” unopened bottled water isn’t going to do you any harm, it isn’t going to get better with age, either. The plastic that water is packaged in — usually polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for retail bottles and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for water cooler jugs — is slightly porous, so the water can pick up smells and tastes from the outside world. Keep a case of bottled water in the basement for a year or so and it’s going to pick up some interesting flavors. There’s nothing better on a hot summer day than a 2007 Evian, with hints of dust and a crisp kitty litter finish!

REMOVING TOXINS IN OUR TAP WATER

TOXINS IN OUR TAP WATER

Great article from Livestrong.com about toxins in our water and how they can affect children.
Toxins are every where, small doses the body can handle, but added up over time is when trouble can happen. A Total Water Cleaner removes over 95% of the toxins from our tap water, giving you clean chemical free water from every tap in your home.

HOW TO REMOVE TOXINS FROM CHILDREN'S BODIES

Children are exposed to chemical toxins from environmental sources, substances in their homes and the foods they eat. According to the doctors at Healthy Child, contaminants in water can cause illness and even behavioral problems. By raising your child in a healthy environment, feeding him organic foods and making sure he drinks plenty of clean, filtered water, you can flush toxins out of his system and limit his exposure to further contaminants.

Step 1

Install a water filtration system in your home. Unfiltered tap water may contain agricultural chemicals, chlorine and lead, none of which your child should be drinking or using to bathe. Clean water helps flush these chemicals out of your child's body and rid him of toxins.

5 reasons not to drink bottled water

It's expensive, wasteful and — contrary to popular belief — not any healthier for you than tap water.

Bottled water is healthy water — or so marketers would have us believe. Just look at the labels or the bottled water ads: deep, pristine pools of spring water; majestic alpine peaks; healthy, active people gulping down icy bottled water between biking in the park and a trip to the yoga studio.

In reality, bottled water is just water. That fact isn't stopping people from buying a lot of it. Estimates variously place worldwide bottled water sales at between $50 and $100 billion each year, with the market expanding at the startling annual rate of 7 percent.

Bottled water is big business. But in terms of sustainability, bottled water is a dry well. It's costly, wasteful and distracts from the brass ring of public health: the construction and maintenance of safe municipal water systems.

Want some solid reasons to kick the bottled water habit? We've rounded up five to get you started.

1) Bottled water isn't a good value
Take, for instance, Pepsi's Aquafina or Coca-Cola's Dasani bottled water. Both are sold in 20 ounce sizes and can be purchased from vending machines alongside soft drinks — and at the same price. Assuming you can find a $1 machine, that works out to 5 cents an ounce. These two brands are essentially filtered tap water, bottled close to their distribution point. Most municipal water costs less than 1 cent per gallon.

Now consider another widely sold liquid: gasoline. It has to be pumped out of the ground in the form of crude oil, shipped to a refinery (often halfway across the world), and shipped again to your local filling station.

In the U.S., the average price per gallon is hovering around $3. There are 128 ounces in a gallon, which puts the current price of gasoline at a fraction over 2 cents an ounce.

And that's why there's no shortage of companies that want to get into the business. In terms of price versus production cost, bottled water puts Big Oil to shame.

2) No healthier than tap water
In theory, bottled water in the United States falls under the regulatory authority of the Food and Drug Administration. In practice, about 70 percent of bottled water never crosses state lines for sale, making it exempt from FDA oversight.

While public safety groups correctly point out that many municipal water systems are aging and there remain hundreds of chemical contaminants for which no standards have been established, there's very little empirical evidence that suggests bottled water is any cleaner or better for you than its tap equivalent.

3) Bottled water means garbage
Bottled water produces up to 1.5 million tons of plastic waste per year. According to Food and Water Watch, that plastic requires up to 47 million gallons of oil per year to produce. And while the plastic used to bottle beverages is of high quality and in demand by recyclers, over 80 percent of plastic bottles are simply thrown away.

That assumes empty bottles actually make it to a garbage can. Plastic waste is now at such a volume that vast eddies of current-bound plastic trash now spin endlessly in the world's major oceans. This represents a great risk to marine life, killing birds and fish which mistake our garbage for food.

Thanks to its slow decay rate, the vast majority of all plastics ever produced still exist — somewhere.

4) Bottled water means less attention to public systems
Many people drink bottled water because they don't like the taste of their local tap water, or because they question its safety.

This is like running around with a slow leak in your tire, topping it off every few days rather than taking it to be patched. Only the very affluent can afford to switch their water consumption to bottled sources. Once distanced from public systems, these consumers have little incentive to support bond issues and other methods of upgrading municipal water treatment.

5) The corporatization of water
In the documentary film Thirst, authors Alan Snitow and Deborah Kaufman demonstrated the rapid worldwide privatization of municipal water supplies, and the effect these purchases are having on local economies.

Water is being called the "Blue Gold" of the 21st century. Thanks to increasing urbanization and population, shifting climates and industrial pollution, fresh water is becoming humanity's most precious resource.

Multinational corporations are stepping in to purchase groundwater and distribution rights wherever they can, and the bottled water industry is an important component in their drive to commoditize what many feel is a basic human right: the access to safe and affordable water.

What can you do?
There's a simple alternative to bottled water: buy a stainless steel thermos, and use it. Don't like the way your local tap water tastes? Inexpensive carbon filters will turn most tap water sparkling fresh at a fraction of bottled water's cost.

Consider taking Food and Water Watch's No Bottled Water Pledge. Conserve water wherever possible, and stay on top of local water issues. Want to know more? Start with the Sierra Club's fact sheet on bottled water.

Bottoms up!

The Risks of Chlorination By-Products

Lab animals exposed to very high levels of THMs have an increased risk of cancer. Several studies on humans have also found a link between long-term exposure to high levels of chlorination by-products and a higher risk of cancer. For instance, a recent study showed an increased risk of bladder and possibly colon cancer in people who drank chlorinated water for 35 years or more.

High levels of THMs may also have an effect on pregnancy. A California study found that pregnant women who drank large amounts of tap water with high THMs had an increased risk of miscarriage. These studies do not prove that there is a link between THMs and cancer or miscarriage. However, they do show the need for further research in this area to confirm potential health effects.

The Cost Of Bottled Water

How much does it cost you a month to drink bottled water?
Here is Winnipeg's tap water vs bottled water.

Winnipeg's tap water cost $1.35/cubic meter (1000 litres of water), that is .0014 cents per litre.
A bottle of water costs between 50 cents and $1.29/500ml, or an average of  $1.80 per litre.
A 5 gallon jug of waters average cost is about $3.00 (about 19 litres), that is .16 cents per litre.

Bottled water is on average 1300 times more expensive than Winnipeg tap water.
5 gallon jugs are on average 115 times more expensive than tap water.

It is recommended that an average person drinks 8 cups a day, about 2 litres.
If you were to drink your monthly requirement of 2 litres of water a day (about 600 litres a month), and just were to use bottled water it would cost you about $1200 a month.
If you use 5 gallon jugs of water it would cost about $96 a month.
If you use Winnipeg tap water it would cost you about $0.84 a month.

Add a Total Water Cleaner to your home for only $ 29.95/month and your drinking water would cost you under $31/month, and would be healthier for you than any bottled water.
You get the benefits of clean chemical free water from every tap in your home for not just drinking, also for cooking and bathing in.
Chemical free clean water from every tap in your home for a fraction of the cost of bottled waters, plus less impact on the environment.

The Hidden Danger Of Chlorine In Our Bath Water

A Total Water Cleaner will remove over 95% of the chlorine in our tap water. For only $29.95/month you get clean chemical free water from every tap in your home. Please contact us for more information.

Here is a very informative article from Andie Klein (a Registered Nurse and webmaster), about the dangers of chlorine in our tap water.

The Hidden Danger Of Chlorine In Our Bath Water

Most of us associate a long, relaxing soak in the bath with candlelight, soothing music and a few drops of our favorite essential oils.

Not many of us stop to think about the dangers associated with chlorine in our bath water. Most people don't realize that more chemicals enter our body through skin absorption and inhalation of steam while showering and bathing than does from drinking water.

Chlorine is regarded as one of the most important advances of modern civilisation as it disinfects the water and prevents would be outbreaks of waterborne disease like typhoid, dysentery and cholera that existed in the 1800's. Chlorine also controls and eliminates the growth of microbes such as Giardia and Ecoli.

New evidence suggests that despite its disinfectant properties, the addition of chlorine to our municipal water may adversely affect our health, especially in the long-term. There is much concern amongst experts about the harmful effects of chlorine. According to the US Council of Environmental Quality, the cancer risk amongst people drinking and absorbing chlorinated water is as much as 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine".

Elemental chlorine is extremely reactive and it combines with other natural compounds to form toxic by-products such as THMs (Trihalomethanes) and chlorinated hydrocarbons. TTHMs (Total Trihalomethanes) are a by-product of municipal water disinfection. These chlorine by-products trigger the production of free radicals in the body, causing cell damage, and are highly carcinogenic.

Why is bathing in chlorinated water so bad?

* A warm bath opens the skin's pores and allows for easier absorption of chlorine and other chemicals.

* The steam we inhale while bathing can contain up to 20 times the level of chlorine and other synthetic chemicals than tap water.

* Inhalation of chlorine and chemical vapors is a suspected cause of bronchitis and asthma in children.

* Chlorine attacks the skin's natural moisture barrier and dries the skin out.

* Chlorinated water can also irritate the eyes, leaving them red, itchy and burning.

As we become more aware of the health risks associated with chlorine in our water supply, more people every day are turning to water filters to provide them with clean drinking and shower water. Relatively few people are aware that a filter exists to remove virtually all chlorine from their bath water and is appropriately named the bath ball filter.

It doesn't make much sense to allow chlorinated water to splash all over your body, seeping into your eyes, ears and mouth. Bath water filters greatly reduce the symptoms associated with chlorine inhalation and irritation by removing more than 90% of chlorine found in the water.

An article from The Candida Diet website -

How Chlorine Damages Your Immune System

Along with keeping Candida in check and aiding your digestion, the good bacteria in your gut also form a highly important part of your immune system. These good bacteria line your intestines to prevent viruses and harmful bacteria from getting in your system. A healthy population of gut flora uses nutrients quickly and efficiently, preventing colonies of harmful organisms from getting the fuel they need to grow.
The lymph tissue that lines your digestive system creates over sixty percent of your immune cells. It decides what bacteria and elements get through and which ones should be eliminated. It acts as a barrier for bad bacteria and a transport for good elements. Another role that your good bacteria play is by communicating with this part of your immune system to focus it on ‘foreign’ microbes.
When chlorine gets in your system, it destroys much of your beneficial intestinal flora. This not only disrupts your digestion and causes issues such as bloating and indigestion, but also also allows the Candida yeast to run rampant and weaken your immune system.
Everyone has small amounts of Candida in their system, but they are limited by the good bacteria in your digestive tract. When your system is healthy, the Candida Albicans cells are harmless. However when your system has been compromised, the Candida will multiply and turn into a fungus. This is Candida overgrowth, a condition that can damage your intestinal wall, weaken your immune system and cause numerous other health issues.

Fluoride In Our Water

The addition of fluoride to the public water supply is the most insidious way of chronically poisoning hundreds of millions of people around the world. Dr. Dean Burk was former chief chemist of the National Cancer Institute, and has co-authored studies with many Nobel prize winners including Otto Warburton, and he is the co-author of the most cited paper in the entire field of biochemistry - the Lineweaver-Burk Enzyme Kinetics. In the 1970s, Dean Burk conducted a number of studies which linked fluoride and cancer. - For the entire article click here

Long term exposure to Fluoride results in a wide range of chronic diseases.
Here are fluoride results from 2011/2012.

Winnipeg - .72 ppm
Brandon - .70 - 1.3 ppm
Regina - .10 ppm
Saskatoon - .63

HARMFUL EFFECTS OF FLUORIDE
Fluoride is used as an insecticide and a roach killer. Even at the level they use to fluoridate your public water supply, usually at the rate of about 1 part fluoride for every million parts of water (1 ppm) by weight, it causes severe problems. As little as one-tenth of an ounce of fluoride will cause death. It is more poisonous than lead and just slightly less poisonous than arsenic. No one will die from drinking one glass of fluoridated water, but it is the long term chronic effects of drinking fluoridated water that affects health. Dental fluorosis is one of the earlier signs of fluoride poisoning, appearing in mild cases as a chalky area on the tooth, and in more advanced cases, teeth become yellow brown or black and the tips break off. Fluoride in the drinking water leads to fluoride levels in tissues and organs which damage enzymes. This results in a wide range of chronic diseases. Fluoride weakens the immune system and may cause allergic type reactions including dermatitis, eczema and hives. It causes birth defects and genetic damage. Fluoride is likely to aggravate kidney disease, diabetes and hypothyroidism. The amount consumed in drinking water has been shown to lower thyroid activity in humans. It also causes the breakdown of collagen which results in wrinkling of the skin and the weakening of ligaments, tendons and muscles. There are a number of ways that fluoride can be administered. The most insidious way is through the drinking water.

CHLORINATED WATER CAN AFFECT CANCER RISK - Epidemiology 1998

Lifetime consumption of chlorinated tap water can more than double the risk of bladder and rectal cancers in certain individuals, two new studies conclude. Both studies examined the lifetime water-consumption patterns, diets and lifestyles of over 2,200 middle-aged and elderly Iowans suffering from either bladder, colon, or rectal cancers. Those profiles were then compared with those of a pool of nearly 2,000 healthy 'controls'.

Recent research has suggested that chlorine reacts with naturally-found organic compounds in water to form what the study authors call "chlorination byproducts." They say many of these byproducts are "mutagenic and/or carcinogenic." The first study found that smoking men who drank chlorinated tap water for more than 40 years faced double the risk of bladder cancer compared with smoking men who drank nonchlorinated water. Women who drank chlorinated water, on the other hand, had only slightly raised risks for bladder cancers, regardless of (their) smoking status.

The second study found that rates for rectal cancers for both sexes escalated with duration of consumption of chlorinated water. Individuals on low-fiber diets who also drank chlorinated water for over 40 years more than doubled their risk for rectal cancer, compared with lifetime drinkers of nonchlorinated water.
Similar differences were also found between the risk patterns of chlorinated-water drinkers who exercised at least once a week, and those who exercised just once a month, or less. Experts have long recommended regular exercise as one means of reducing one's risk of rectal and other cancers. The study found no link between the long-term consumption of chlorinated tap water and the incidence of colon cancer. This was not surprising, the researchers explain, since colon tumors have very different patterns of genesis and development compared with rectal tumors.

They speculate that the source of chlorinated tap water may help determine its potential to promote cancers. Since surface water (such as that found in lakes and reservoirs) usually contains higher concentrations of organic compounds, the study authors say it is also more likely to contain higher levels of (potentially carcinogenic) chlorination byproducts, compared with water sourced from deep underground.

Fluoride, The Silent Killer

This is an article from the Consumer Health Organization of Canada's Articles on fluoride. Fluoride has been added to our water for years and people are finally realizing the dangers to the long term exposure to it. Read more below -

FLUORIDE, THE SILENT KILLER
by: Yiamouyiannis, John, Ph.D.

Dr. Yiamouyiannis received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Rhode Island and served his post-doctoral fellowship at the Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He then became editor at Chemical Abstracts Service, the world's largest chemical information center, where he first became aware of the health damaging effects of fluoride. He is the former science director of the National Health Federation; he is the executive director of Health Action and president of the Safe Water Foundation. He is a world-leading authority on the biological effects of fluoride and is responsible for ending the use of fluoride in many areas of the United States and abroad.

The most insidious way is through the drinking water. Some of you have it in your mouthwashes, or in your toothpaste, or you may take a fluoride supplement which is dispensed in pills or drops.

FLUORIDE A BY-PRODUCT OF INDUSTRY

Fluoride is an industrial waste product, a by-product of the aluminum industry and the phosphate fertilizer companies who have mountains of fluoride that is polluting the ground water. They have to get rid of it, and the old solution to pollution is dilution - just put it in the drinking water. People living in the vicinity of aluminum, phosphate, steel, clay, glass and enamel plants are exposed to high levels of fluoride in the air. For instance, the Hamilton area shows extremely high lung cancer rates that decrease as you get away from the downwind plume of the steel mills. If fluoride was left with the phosphate and sold to farmers, it would kill their crops. That is what originally happened when they used this high fluoride phosphate, and the farmers said they were going back to manure.

ADDITION OF FLUORIDE TO PUBLIC WATER SYSTEMS

The addition of fluoride to the public water supply is the most insidious way of chronically poisoning hundreds of millions of people around the world. Dr. Dean Burk was former chief chemist of the National Cancer Institute, and has co-authored studies with many Nobel prize winners including Otto Warburton, and he is the co-author of the most cited paper in the entire field of biochemistry - the Lineweaver-Burk Enzyme Kinetics. In the 1970s, Dean Burk and I conducted a number of studies which linked fluoride and cancer. There was already scientific evidence from the 1950s that fluoride was causing cancer, and a 1963 study by Driscowitz and Norton showed that increased fluoride concentrations in the media of experimental animals increased tumour incidence from 12% at the lowest concentrations up to 100%. Taylor and Taylor published a study in 1965 at the University of Texas in all the mainline medical journals showing that 1 ppm or even 0.5 ppm increased tumour growth rate by 25%. These studies bothered me and around 1975 I found that we had enough data to compare the cancer death rate before and after fluoridation of fluoridated communities and compare them to non-fluoridated communities. Based on millions of subjects, the study showed a 5 to 10% increase in cancer death rate within three to five years after fluoridation was put into the water after correcting for various demographic factors like age, race and sex. All the variables were controlled. We followed this by a series of other studies. In 1977 we had full blown Congressional Hearings, and Congress stated: "We can no longer assure the American public that fluoride does not cause cancer". Dean Burk and other well-known scientists were there, and on the opposing side was the American Dental Association. Ten years later, Proctor and Gamble, makers of Crest toothpaste found that fluoride was causing precarcinogenic changes in cells.

HOW FLUORIDE AFFECTS THE DNA REPAIR MECHANISM
Epidemiological evidence shows that fluoride causes cancer. It does this in several ways. It can actually cause the original lesion. In each one of our cells we have genetic material called DNA, and this DNA is double stranded, it has a helix shape and these two strands of DNA are held together by semi strong bonds called hydrogen bonds. Hydrogen bonds also hold proteins together. Fluoride goes in and breaks those hydrogen bonds, and consequently destabilizes DNA. It can't cause a lesion in the DNA itself, but if it is in a site of the cell that regulates cell growth, it will cause uncontrolled cell growth. A few minor modifications will give you first a tumour, and secondly an invasive tumour or cancer. So fluoride has the ability to actually cause the cancer. We have a marvelous system of repair and rejuvenation. Even if we go out in the sun, even if we have a lesion by fluoride itself, we have what is called a DNA repair enzyme system. So any lesion caused by the sun or ultra-violet light will be repaired. The DNA repair enzyme system will cut off the ends and use the complementary strand to repair itself and make intact genetic material. The unfortunate thing is that one part per million fluoride, the amount of fluoride that they use in the public water system, depresses the DNA repair system by 50%. So they have attacked us on the first defense of damage to our genetic material. Since people can get cancer from so many different causes, fluoride is just increasing our chances of getting cancer.

THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Even if the cancer cell starts dividing and invading surrounding tissues, if our immune system is strong enough, it will kill those cancer cells without any remedies, without chemotherapy, without anything and will destroy the occasional cancer that maybe all of us have had at one time or another. Once in a while cancer breaks through when the immune system is low or the DNA repair enzyme system is down, and we will get cancer. Fluoride causes the lesion; it inhibits the DNA repair enzyme, and then inhibits our immune system by 30 to 70%. And that occurs at only one part per million. How does it do that? Our immune system is composed of white blood cells including phagocyte cells that are carried in the blood system. If there is an infection or cancer or some foreign agent, these phagocytes will go to that area and start engulfing and destroying this bad agent whether it is a cancer cell or a bacterium or virus. It engulfs it in a little pocket called alysosome which squirts enzymes and breaks down the bad agent into little pieces. They have other things called peroxisomes which burn that agent with free radicals and either destroy it or use it for building new and healthy cells. These phagocytes will actually eat up bacteria or viruses, and toxic substances are just thrown off. Studies from the University of Glasgow show that fluoride inhibits these white blood cells. Fluoride at levels below one part per million causes a chronic release of these free radicals from the white blood cell out into the blood stream where it starts slowly damaging your body by increasing free radicals. This is one of the reasons why we call fluoride the ageing factor.

NON-FLUORIDATED WATER

Industrial quality reverse osmosis water brings the total dissolved solids down to less that one part per million for all the pollutants that might be in there. Distilled water will remove 99% of the fluoride all of the time. I also recommend a pre-charcoal filter on a distiller to remove volatiles so that you are not getting noxious gases in your home. These are worse when you inhale them than when you drink them, because they go right into your blood stream and into your lungs. You can buy your water at the supermarket, but quite frankly you don't know what the quality of the water is. You must take care that the fluoride concentration is less than 0.2 ppm. Some spring waters like Vichy (which contains 8 ppm) are notoriously high in fluoride. Avoid beverages such as soft drinks, beer and fruit juices from concentrate that have been bottled in fluoridated areas. Teas, even brewed in fluoride-free water will contain about 1.2 to 2.4 ppm fluoride. Some people drink 8 to 15 cups of tea a day, and these amounts are large enough to cause dental fluorosis and other harmful effects.

Cosmetic Pesticide Ban

Here is a great article from EcoJustice about the fight on banning cosmetic pesticides in Manitoba. EcoJustice isn't the only one that thinks cosmetic pesticides are harmful, the Canadian Lung Association agrees and so do many other non profit health organizations.

Why Manitobans Would Benefit From

A Cosmetic Pesticide Ban

POSTED BY PIERRE HAMILTON AT JUN 28, 2012 10:30 AM
By Kaitlyn Mitchell, staff lawyer

Today a coalition of health and environmental groups from across Canada urged the Manitoba government to protect the health of its communities with a province-wide, cosmetic pesticide ban.

We addressed our letter to the Honourable Gord Mackintosh, Manitoba’s Minister of Conservation and Water Stewardship, who recently took an important first step toward banning cosmetic pesticides by releasing a discussion paper entitled Play it Safe; A Consultation on Cosmetic Law Pesticides. Pesticides used on lawns and gardens for cosmetic purposes expose people, pets and Manitoba’s lakes and rivers to unnecessary and potentially serious harm.

Groups that signed the letter included Ecojustice, the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, the Ontario College of Family Physiciansand many others.

Scientific research overwhelmingly shows that exposure to many pesticides poses serious health risks, including cancer risks among children, as well as reproductive and respiratory problems.

PROTECTING OUR MOST VULNERABLE

Children face the greatest risks from pesticide exposure because they are closer to the ground and because their bodies are still developing. Pesticides can also pose risks to drinking water, as well as fish and wildlife populations.

ALL ABOARD THE PROGRESS TRAIN

Many municipal and six provincial governments across Canada have already reduced that harm, banning the use of non-essential pesticides from lawns, gardens and public parks. Governments have an important role to play in helping Canadians to protect themselves from toxins, and Ecojustice is pleased that the Manitoba government is considering its own ban.

Providing Manitobans with the same protections from exposure to harmful non-essential pesticides that most other Canadians enjoy is the right move. Manitoba families, as well as rivers, streams, and lakes such as Lake Winnipeg, deserve protection.

In our joint letter, the coalition urged the Manitoba Government to take a science-based, precautionary approach and to enact legislation that:
prohibits the use, sale, and retail display of chemical pesticides for lawns, gardens, and non-agricultural landscaping;
allows for exemptions to the ban only where necessary to protect public health;
provides for public education about the ban and alternatives to chemical pesticides; and
includes effective mechanisms for enforcement.

OUR VISION

We look forward to a future where Manitoba’s most vulnerable, children, are no longer exposed to harmful chemicals while playing on lawns or in parks.

Protecting Canada's Drinking Water

Protecting Canada's Drinking Water

Here is a great video from Ecojustice on what is happening to Canada's drinking water, and how we can help stop it. There is only so much water on our planet, so we need to take care of it for our kids, and our kids kids.
Please watch the video and sign the petition at the end.
